There is great news for renewable energy and in particular, the solar industry.
A recent report released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) places the number of people, now employed by the renewable energy sector, globally, at more than 8.1 million. This smashes the previous year’s results, with a strong 5 per cent increase on last year’s jobs figures.
More excitingly for us, the total number of global solar jobs has grown by 11 per cent.
Solar PV remains the biggest producer of employment in the renewable energy sector, with 2.8 million jobs globally.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the Australian Renewable Energy Sector employed 14,020 people at the end of the 2014-2015 financial year. However, it is estimated that the figure will reach 20,500 this year.
Within Australia, renewable energy provided 14.6 per cent of Australia’s electricity in 2015;this is enough to provide power to approximately 6.7 million average homes. This was an increase of 13.5 per cent on the previous year.
It’s interesting to note, that while solar employees are in demand, the report states that jobs in the broader energy market continue to fall.

Results like these demonstrate a global shift towards renewable energy and a commitment by countries to renewable energy targets.
The continued rise in jobs, particularly within solar sector, shows the industry is stable and employment will continue to rise.
